Prince Harry has seemed thoroughly loved-up with former American actress Meghan Markle since 2016. But the British royal was once head over heels for another woman entirely – Chelsy Davy. A royal expert has revealed what really happened in the romance between the young pair during Harry’s gap year. The Prince was just 20 years old when he fell in love with Zimbabwean-born Chelsy after they were introduced by a mutual friend.
Harry spent part of his gap year in Argentina, working on a polo farm and improving his polo.
While he was there, Chelsy flew out to be with him. “[Harry] was thrilled,” said royal author Katie Nicholl in her book Harry: Life, Loss and Love.
“They travelled by private plane to the Entre Rios province in the Mesopotamia region in northeastern Argentina for a romantic weekend,” Nicholls wrote.
“There they dined by candlelight on fresh barbecued fish after energetic days spent hunting and fishing.”
Staff at the lodge were the young lovers stayed spilled the secrets of what happened to the Mail on Sunday.
“Harry and Chelsy were like any young couple in love, kissing and holding hands, and he seems quite besotted,” the paper reported.
“They looked madly in love, and at one point Harry admitted that she was his first true love.”
Chelsy and Harry’s travel – and relationship – did not stop there, though. The Queen’s grandson went on to join Chelsy’s family on the island of Bazaruot off the coast of Mozambique.
“The holiday was a chance for Harry to relax with Chelsy and to go deep-sea snorkelling in the sparkling Indian Ocean,” said Nicholls.
“In the evening the family would get together for ‘jolling’ – drinking games on the beach, when they would knock back ‘volcanoes’ – vodka shots with chilli sauce.
“It was the sort of family holiday Harry had never experienced, and he was happier than he had been in a long time.”
Chelsy and Harry later spent time in Botswana together. According to News of the World: “They spent three days at the Shakawe Fishing Lodge in Botswana, enjoying wild life on the Okavango Delta. The couple had stayed there before and were known to the staff.
“They were very relaxed with each other and happy to put on a public display of affection.
“They also spent two nights on the Kubu Queen, a charmingly ramshackle boat where they cooked their own breakfast on an open fire in the morning and looked for crocodiles an oppose in the day.
“They slept under the stars and had Harry’s bodyguard on the lower deck of the boat as they enjoyed the privacy upstairs.”
Harry also enjoyed holidays away with his later girlfriend Cressida Bonas. He went to see the Northern Lights with her – a trip he also made with Meghan.
A source told Heat Magazine in 2013 that Harry even planned to propose to Cressida at the time. They said: “He wants to propose somewhere close to his heart and he wants to take Cressida to the famous Ice Hotel and then pop the question under the Northern Lights.” However, the couple split the following year.
