Aljaz Skorjanec ‘forgot’ routine as he defends Clara’s exit from Strictly: ‘Didn’t know!’

Aljaz, 30, and Clara, 36, took on the Jive on Strictly Come Dancing last weekend as they performed to Tina Turner’s River Deep Mountain High. The judges awarded the pair a combined score of 19 out of 30 as they noticed the BBC Radio 1 presenter had forgotten some of the steps in the routine. However, speaking on spin-off show It Takes Two following his exit from the competition, the professional dancer confessed to his own mistakes as he also “forgot” parts of the dance.

Speaking with host Zoe Ball, 50, Aljaz explained: “All I was doing was counting in my head, making sure the next beat we did was bang on the music because we needed to do the steps to the specific part of the song.

“And I was counting in my head the whole way through, just making sure we picked up at the right moment,” he continued.

Admitting to his mistake and defending his partner as he was at fault too, the professional added: “At the end, because there was a side-by-side section, I just gently graced the words [of the song] to [Clara] and that was it.

“I didn’t know either any more what was going on,” he declared, leaving the presenter flustered over his admission.

“So neither of you knew what’s going on at that point?” the host asked, to which they both shook their heads.

Following week six of the competition, the pair were placed at the bottom of the leaderboard, the same position they had been in the week previously.

Unfortunately, last weekend’s dance-off saw them go up against Made in Chelsea star Jamie Laing, 31, and his professional partner, Karen Hauer, 38.

The latter pairing had scored 24 out of a possible 30 from the judges after performing a Tango routine on Saturday evening.

It was a unanimous decision by the panel to send Clara and Aljaz home despite the improvements they had made the second time around.

“The Clarasambafo you are a dream to be around, you’re a beautiful girl inside out, I hope that people at home got to see that,” he added.

“This series has been so special and it’s only because of you, thank you so much. I’m going to miss dancing with you.”

Viewers were also disappointed to see the pair leave the show, with one writing on Twitter: “We have enjoyed watching Clara & Aljaz on a Saturday night as a family. Thought she could have gone a lot further @claraamfo @AljazSkorjanec #Strictly.”

“Aww gutted Clara and Aljaz went out. She nailed the jive in the dance off was hoping she’d make it #Strictly,” a second posted.

Now out of the competition, Aljaz has put his support behind his wife Janette Manrara, 37, to become this year’s champion.

The Cuban-born professional has been partnered with chart-topper HRVY, 21, and the pair received the first perfect score of the season on Saturday evening.

They performed a Street Commercial routine as their couple’s choice dance and won huge praise from the judges.

Coral bookmakers have the pair at 4/1 to lift the Glitterball Trophy during the final to air next month.

Strictly Come Dancing continues Saturday at 7:25pm on BBC One.
