Bed bugs are small bloodsucking insects that come out at night to feed on blood, according to the NHS. They live in tiny cracks and crevices in the bedroom, usually around the bed frame, and are about the width of a credit card. While the bugs aren’t necessarily dangerous, they can be very annoying, and leave people with a bad reaction to their bites. You could be at risk of a bed bugs infestation if your bedroom has an “unpleasant” smell.
A bed bugs infestation could cause a smell that’s similar to wet, mouldy clothes, said exterminating company Arrow.
Some people describe the smell as similar to coriander, or even spoiled raspberries, it said.
The smell is caused by the bugs’ scent gland, and is usually a sign of a relatively large infestation.
“The scent gland of bed bugs produces a musty odour that is often described as smelling like coriander.
“The smell is not pleasant. If you have an infestation of bed bugs you may begin to notice your home smells like mouldy shoes or wet mouldy clothes.
“If you are at a point where you notice a bed bug smell, then it could be a good possibility that you may have a problem.
“While many folks describe the smell of a bed bug infestation as smelling like spoiled raspberries, some may also describe it as similar to coriander.
“However, not everyone describes a smell when encountering bed bug infestations. It isn’t always the same experience for everyone.”
You may also notice you have a bed bugs infestation if you develop physical bites.
Bed bug bites tend to appear as red bumps or welts, and they can be very itchy.
The bites are unlikely to have a spot in the centre, added medical website WebMD.
They’re most likely to appear on parts of the body that are exposed at night, including the arms, shoulders or neck.
The bugs themselves can hide in various parts of the room, including around the bed, on clothing, or even in wardrobes.
If you do have a bed bug infestation, you should clean all bedding, curtains and clothes in hot water, and dry them on the highest setting.
Vacuum the bed and the surrounding area. After finishing, empty the contents of the vacuum into a plastic bag and take it straight out to the bin.
If your mattress is infested, it’s probably a good idea to just get rid of it and buy a new one.
