Boris gives thumbs up just after receiving AstraZeneca vaccine – ‘Let’s get the jab done!’

The Prime Minister joins the more than 26 million Brits to have received a first jab of s virus-busting vaccine. He was photographed as he got his first injection of the Covid antidote at St Thomas’s hospital just across the river from Downing Street.

His appointment shortly after 6.30pm this evening was at the same hospital where he was treated for the virus in intensive care last spring.

Mr Johnson gave two thumbs up as he could be seen beaming under his face mask after getting the injection.

Ministers are eager to continue to reassure the public the vaccine is safe after a number of European countries suspended the use of the Oxford-developed antidote earlier this week following concern about blood clots in a small number of people who had been inoculated.

Speaking afterwards, Mr Johnson said: “I had a wonderful nurse called Lily and she said ‘you’re going to feel a sharp jab’.

“I literally did not feel a thing and so it was very good, very quick and you know what I’m going to say: I cannot recommend it too highly.

“Everybody, when you do get your notification to go for a jab please go and get it.

“It’s the best thing for you, the best thing for your family, and for everybody else.”

He added: “Thank you to all of the incredible scientists, NHS staff and volunteers who helped make this happen.

“Getting the jab is the best thing we can do to get back to the lives we miss so much.

“Let’s get the jab done.”
