Brighton vs Arsenal LIVE: Team news confirmed, Mikel Arteta makes Premier League changes

BRIGHTON vs ARSENAL – LIVE!

  • Brighton are looking to complete their first Premier League double over Arsenal
  • The Gunners are winless in four away league games against the Seagulls
  • Arsenal have scored only eight league goals outside of London this term, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang providing seven of those
  • Mikel Arteta’s side have lost only one of their 17 league fixtures against teams currently below them in the table
  • The Seagulls could equal their top-flight club record of 10 matches without a win on Saturday

Brighton XI: Ryan, Schelotto, Webster, Dunk, Burn, Bissouma, Propper, Mooy, Gross, Maupay, Trossard

Arsenal XI: Leno, Bellerin, Mustafi, Holding, Kolasinac, Pepe, Ceballos, Guendouzi, Saka, Aubameyang, Lacazette

Brighton run-in

I wasn’t aware of the severity of the task facing Brighton. As previously mentioned, they are only two points above the relegation zone and I’ve just looked at their fixtures.

They don’t look pretty.

Arsenal (H), Leicester (a), Manchester United (H), Norwich (a), Liverpool (H), Manchester City (H), Southampton (a), Newcastle (H), Burnley (a).

Those last three games could be HUGE if they don’t pick up points against the big boys.

Perfect fixture?

There’s a touch of negativity surrounding Arsenal at the moment – but a 10-man away defeat to Manchester City should be forgiven if you ask me. It doesn’t end well for many visitors.

The Gunners have an excellent opportunity to put things right here this afternoon.

The Seagulls have yet to win a game in 2020, and are now sat two points above the relegation zone. They’ve also not played a competitive game since a goalless draw with Wolves on March 7.

Arsenal with good changes, no David Luiz and a competitive match under their belts should really be able to get the three points here. SHOULD being the operative word.

Charlie Nicholas’ view

Arsenal legend Charlie Nicholas doing his best Roy Keane with his views on Mikel Arteta’s side.

Speaking of which… how brilliant was Keane on Sky Sports last night? Whether you love or hate him – he’s absolute blockbuster.

Now back to Nicholas.

“Wednesday was what I expected,” he told Sky Sports. “The one scenario I did not expect was the team which Mikel Arteta picked. Mesut Ozil was dropped – he has been dropped before in these types of games. He went for youth and he can see where the future is.

“I do not see it as a massive debate or crisis for Arsenal. They are ninth for a reason. There is a reason behind just the nine wins from 29. Over the last five or six years, Arsenal’s defence has been poor, not average, but poor. How a team can let this go on for so long is mind-blowing.

“The fans pointed the finger at Arsene Wenger. Wenger identified the defenders he needed and they became silkier, in football terms, after arriving, but for five seasons, Arsenal cannot seem to find a centre-half – for all the centre-backs in the world they cannot find one.”

Full time

Well… that escalated quickly. The game between Watford and Leicester down at Vicarage Road looked to be heading for a goalless draw but all hell broke loose in the 90th-minute.

Left-back ben Chilwell scored a blinder from distance to give Brendan Rodgers’ side the late advantage – but Watford weren’t finished.

Cometh the hour, cometh Craig bloody Dawson to score a 93rd-minute equaliser with a bicycle kick! It finished 1-1.

Although I think the most stunning thing was Dawson claiming that he’s practiced those in training.

“It’s something you practise in training and it probably doesn’t go in very often. I’m delighted with my first goal. It was obviously a very important goal and it was good to get a point in the end,” he told BT Sport.

Twitter round-up

Kazeem: Very strong Arsenal team by Mikel Arteta. Quality, experience and some youth. Should be an easy win at Brighton if he coaches them well and gets his tactics right. Injuries have no bearing on performance and results so he has no excuses.

Allan: Surprised to see Sead Kolasinac start at left-back. Think you could play Bukayo Saka and play Gabriel Martinelli out wide.

Jamie: Brighton away. Our season starts today. We have to show a better performance than we showed against Manchester City for our first televised 3pm kick off. I hope Mikel Arteta showed them the riot act and we will see a lot of wrongs put right this afternoon.

Rather threatening tweet from Jamie there. Like the commitment though, Jay.

Team news – Brighton

Graham Potter keeps it simple. He makes two changes from the side drew 0-0 against Wolves all those weeks ago.

Pascal Gross starts ahead of Solly March, while Ezequiel Schelotto is preferred to Marvin Montoya at right-back.

Neal Maupay leads the line despite forward Aaron Connolly having fully recovered from knee and ankle injury.

Team news – Arsenal

Arsenal make five changes from the defeat at Manchester City.

Two of those changes are enforced because of injuries to Granit Xhaka and Pablo Mari. Rob Holding starts at centre-back, while Real Madrid loanee Dani Ceballos is in midfield.

Youngsters Joe Willock and Eddie Nketiah drop to the bench and are replaced by Alexandre Lacazette and record signing Nicolas Pepe.

Sead Kolasinac comes in for Kieran Tierney at left-back – perhaps to give the Scottish international a rest.

Starting XI

The team news arrives and there are changes, folks. Mikel Arteta includes Alexandre Lacazette, Nicolas Pepe and Rob Holding in the starting XI. Mesut Ozil returns to the bench. Aaron Connolly is fit enough to make the squad and is one of Graham Potter’s substitutes.

Brighton XI: Ryan, Schelotto, Webster, Dunk, Burn, Bissouma, Propper, Mooy, Gross, Maupay, Trossard.

Subs: Button, Montoya, Lamptey, Duffy, Stephens, Mac Allister, March, Murray, Connolly.

Arsenal XI: Leno, Bellerin, Mustafi, Holding, Kolasinac, Pepe, Ceballos, Guendouzi, Saka, Aubameyang, Lacazette.

Subs: Martinez, Maitland-Niles, Medley, Tierney, Willock, Nelson, Ozil, Nketiah, Martinelli.

Elsewhere…

Watford and Leicester are slugging it out at Vicarage Road as we speak. It remains goalless with 65 minutes on the clock.

It’s… well it’s warming up slightly. Warm like a cigarette lighter trying to warm a country mansion. Precious few chances but rapid winger Ismaila Sarr has probably missed the best of them.

What happened on Wednesday?

Tough one for Arsenal supporters to take. Gunners fans had waited exactly 100 days for the return of the Premier League and Manchester City spoiled the party.

Arsenal started quite well in fairness but what can only be described as a David Luiz Special saw any hope of a result go up in flames.

Incredible to think someone could do that much damage in just 30 minutes. Almost impressive. Anyway, the Brazilian won’t be involved today for obvious reason – so Mikel Arteta has a bit of a headache with his limited defensive options.

Afternoon

Fancy seeing you here… welcome to our LIVE coverage of Brighton vs Arsenal.

I was about to say ‘welcome to the Amex Stadium’ but of course I’ve not been permitted entry because of the new rules and will instead keep you updated remotely.

I come to you LIVE from my office/bedroom/kitchen with everything I possibly can to keep you updated on today’s low-key but extremely important fixture.

Mikel Arteta’s side are eight points behind fourth-placed Chelsea – so Champions League qualification looks an uphill task. Actually, I’d say nearly impossible.

But Europa League football is still on the menu and victory today would keep the Gunners in the mix.

As for Brighton, well they are still engulfed in a relegation battle. The Seagulls are in 15th – two points above the drop.

Big, big game today. Team news and line-ups are on the way. Standby.

BRIGHTON vs ARSENAL – TEAM NEWS

Mikel Arteta has been given a selection headache after Wednesday’s defeat to Manchester City.

Granit Xhaka is likely to miss out having been withdrawn with an ankle problem at the Etihad Stadium. January signing Pablo Mari also suffered an injury in the opening 20 minutes of that midweek clash.

David Luiz begins a two-game ban after his red card while Mesut Ozil’s fitness continues to be assessed ahead of a potential recall.

Manager Graham Potter only has one player missing from the squad and that’s long-term absentee Jose Izquierdo.

Forward Aaron Connolly has recovered from knee and ankle problems and is pushing for an inclusion in the starting XI.
