As spotted by the eagle-eyed team at ISPreview, it seems customers who want the best broadband in town will need fairly deep pockets.
Prices for BT’s Full Fibre 1000 start from £59.99 per month with that cost increasing to £67.99 per month after an initial 24-month period.
That’s a pretty high price to pay especially when you compare it to BT’s basic 50Mbps speeds which currently cost £27.99 per month.
Along with that 1Gbps pricing, there’s also some other new plans which include Full Fibre 500 (500Mbps speeds) for £49.99 per month and Full Fibre 100 (100Mbps speeds) £39.99 per month. All the plans in question require customers to pay a £9.99 upfront fee.
So why do you need these new speeds and is it worth that high price?
With 1Gbps connection beamed into your home, you’ll be able to download a 1080p full HD blockbuster (around 5GB in size) in just 42 seconds – on the UK’s average connection, downloading the same film will take 13 minutes.
If you’d rather watch in UHD 4K (around 20GB), the Gig1 connection will have the film queued-up in less than 3 minutes, compared to nearly an hour (52 minutes) on the UK’s average connection.
And lastly, downloading a Sony PlayStation 4 game – like Red Dead Redemption 2 (99GB) – takes just 14 minutes, compared to 4 hours and 20 minutes on the average connection.
If you’re a heavy user these new speeds will make a big difference as long as you’re happy to pay that higher price.
If you’re interested in BT’s Full Fibre 1000 then the firm says the service will be available in hundreds of cities, towns and villages across the UK, including rolling out across Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Liverpool, Leeds, London and Manchester from later this month, totalling more than two million households, and giving BT the biggest Full Fibre network reach of any provider in the UK.
It’s worth remembering that Virgin Media also offers its Gig1 service in areas including Southampton, Reading and Greater Manchester with prices starting from £62 per month.
