Moscow’s actions come following the outbreaks of bubonic plague that hit Mongolia and China. In Siberia 2,500 adults and 623 children have been vaccinated so far. The region in Russia shares a border with Mongolia.
The Black Death disease is spread by fleas living on wild rodents.
A massive sanitation campaign has been carried out in remote villages to kill infected fleas.
Rospotrebnadzor, Russia’s health watchdog, said: “A wide distribution of the plague pathogen was revealed in Ovyursky and Mongun-Taiginsky districts with a total area of 131 square miles.
“In Ovyursky district, the dangerous area is Khandagayty settlement with a population of over 3,000.
“Here, urgently, employees of the epidemiological squad carried out barrier disinfection, treating 4,000 hectares around the village from plague carriers.”
Eight shepherd camps with 51 people including 16 children were said to be at serious risk of infection in one area.
This comes after two deaths from the bubonic plague were reported in China’s Inner Mongolia.
In the Chinese province, two villages were sealed off.
The news of the Black Death disease comes as Vladimir Putin said Russia has the world’s first coronavirus vaccine.
Russia’s health ministry announced how the vaccine will provide immunity for two years.
The vaccine, Sputnik V, is still in its final stages of trials to test whether it is effective at preventing coronavirus infection and whether it is safe.
Russia plans to produce 30million doses inside the country before the end of the year.
Moscow said the vaccine has been given regulatory approval following less than two months of human trails.
Mr Putin said: “As far as I know, a vaccine against a new coronavirus infection has been registered this morning, for the first time in the world.
“I know that it works quite effectively, it forms a stable immunity and, I repeat, has passed all the necessary checks.”
The President revealed that his daughter had taken an injection of the vaccine.
Mr Putin said: “One of my daughters got herself this shot. I think in this sense she took part in the experiment.”
