Holidays are currently on hold for Britons both in the UK and abroad as travel restrictions and quarantine rules remain in place. But that doesn’t mean Britons can’t plan for their future staycations. And with more Britons than ever before planning a staycation getaway, a canal holiday might be the perfect option.
But rather than floating through noisy towns and bustling cities, beginners on the canal boat holiday scene may prefer a more laid-back approach in the countryside.
One company, Drifters Waterways Holiday operators, is planning to restart operations on July 4.
The company offers more than 550 self-drive narrowboats for hire, from 45 bases across England, Wales and Scotland which could be handy for those in most locations in the UK.
The best aspect about a self-drive narrowboat holiday is that it provides a floating holiday home for cruising through the countryside.
Depending on the size, boats can accommodate between two and 12 people.
All boats are equipped with essential home comforts, including central heating, hot water, TV, showers, microwaves, flushing toilets, and many now have WiFi too.
Prices this year begin at £560 for a short break which is three or four nights or a weekend for four people.
Or if you want to spend a week floating through the UK, then it’s £725.
Here are some of Driters’ top countryside routes.
Complete the Droitwich Mini-Ring which is the only canal boat holiday cruising circuit in Britain which can be completed in three or four nights.
Calder & Hebble Navigation
From Drifters’ base at Sowerby Bridge, canal boat holidaymakers can travel to Brighouse and back along the leafy Calder & Hebble Navigation.
Fradley Pool Nature Reserve
On a short break from Drifters’ canal boat hire base on the Trent & Mersey Canal at Great Haywood in Staffordshire, narrowboat holiday-makers can head south to Fradley Junction, where the Coventry Canal meets the Trent & Mersey.
The journey takes around five hours, travelling through 12 peaceful miles of Staffordshire countryside and passing through just five locks.
