Bayer Leverkusen star Kai Havertz has laid down his condition for a potential move to Chelsea at the end of the season. The 21-year-old has made it known to club bosses that he would like to further his career elsewhere.
A host of top European clubs, including Manchester United and Real Madrid, want to sign the versatile midfielder.
However, German publication Sport Bild claim Havertz would only be interested in a move to Stamford Bridge if the Blues secure Champions League football.
Chelsea are fourth in the Premier League table but sit just two points above United and Wolves heading into tonight’s clash with Manchester City.
Failure to beat Pep Guardiola’s side will leave Chelsea in a precarious position with the chasing pack all vying for their spot.
Fifth place in the Premier League will earn qualification into the Champions League if City’s European ban is upheld. A decision is expected next month.
Havertz wants to be challenging for the biggest trophies of them all so final league positioning is vital.
Frank Lampard has already acted decisively in the transfer market, capturing Ajax ace Hakim Ziyech and RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner.
Yesterday, the former midfielder denied that his side had made a £81million offer for Havertz.
“He’s obviously a top player but we’re not going to comment on other players at other teams,” Lampard said of Havertz.
But should moves for either of those Englishmen fail then Havertz is a viable alternative.
At the Bernabeu Zinedine Zidane is under pressure to avoid a rare trophyless season.
Should Los Blancos fail to beat Barcelona to the La Liga title then all eyes will be on them to recruit well this summer.
