Chelsea manager Frank Lampard sends brutal message to players after Sheffield Utd defeat

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard has blasted his players for a ropey performance in the defeat to Sheffield United and warned: “I learned a lot and I won’t forget that”.

The Blues’ top-four hopes suffered a major blow at Bramall Lane as David McGoldrick’s brace was sandwiched by Oli McBurnie’s first-half header.

It was a wretched display that left Lampard furious and offered fresh hope to Leicester City and Manchester United.

Lampard fumed: “They were better than us, physically, in the mind and with the ball. So you lose the game. They were stronger than us.

“You feel and hear every noise and all I could hear was Sheffield United voices.

“I am not concerned about top four today. All I do is sit and watch the games and consider what we want to do. But today I am concerned with how we performed. We will see where we are when we approach Norwich. But we can’t approach Norwich or Manchester United or Wolves like we did today.”

The three points boosts the Blades’ hopes of qualifying for next season’s Europa League.

Chris Wilder’s men have been the surprise package of the season and took advantage of mistakes in Chelsea’s defence to head home with a comfortable win.

McGoldrick’s double were his first goals in the Premier League.

While the veteran striker may not be prolific, his work-rate and hold-up play is appreciated by his boss.

And he’s hoping that there’s plenty more to come now he’s broken his duck.

“I have told the lads ‘don’t worry’,” McGoldrick said. “When it comes I will get a brace. I said in the press I wasn’t concerned. The goals were coming as I have had chances. I hope there is many more to come.

“It means the world. I made my debut at 16 and I made that dream to play in the Premier League. Now I have another dream of scoring.”

He added: “That was us at our best today.”
