Coronation Street spoilers: Beloved couple ‘torn apart forever’ after heartbreaking news

Steve McDonald (played by Simon Gregson) has had quite a turbulent relationship with Tracy Barlow (Kate Ford) over the years, ever since he got her pregnant with daughter Amy Barlow (Elle Mulvaney) 16 years ago on Coronation Street. Several failed relationships and marriages later, the pair were finally drawn back together against all the odds. Both have had affairs since they rekindled their romance, but in recent months on the ITV soap, they have seemed stronger than ever. However, with his son Oliver Battersby (Emmanuel and Jeremiah Cheetham) seriously ill, it seems the husband and wife could be torn apart forever.

Before he gave things another go with Tracy, Steve had a one-night stand with Leanne Battersby (Jane Danson), which led to the birth of their young son.

The mother-of-one never pursued a relationship with her child’s father, but the pair slept together once more on the day before his wedding to his now-wife.

Although she was angry to begin with and caused a crash which left Oliver’s mother fighting for her life, the young boy’s father was finally forgiven.

However, as the toddler’s parents are brought back together following their son’s life-changing diagnosis, it seems a split could be on the horizon for the show’s most dramatic couple.

After displaying concerning signs about his ill health and having suffered a series of seizures, recent episodes have seen the youngster diagnosed with Mitochondrial Disease.

With the toddler currently in hospital, the heartbreaking news has already seen Leanne and her partner Nick Tilsley (Ben Price) suffer some romantic woes.

The latter was worried he was being pushed out of the picture as Oliver’s real dad was sitting at his girlfriend’s side, rather than him.

Although the pair have since addressed the tension, the Underworld Factory boss might have been right to be worried.

“Also, the impact that has on their relationships with other loved ones because obviously, this story will draw them closer and closer together to the point where they are bonded more tightly than they’ve ever been,” he explained.

Where this leaves their respective other halves, the soap boss added: “The difficulty then for Nick and Tracy is they start to feel slightly shut out from that little triangle of Steve, Leanne and Oliver.

“It makes you the worst person in the world if you express that so the difficulties for Tracy and Nick are trying to find the best way through to support the person they love, while simultaneously feeling like they’re being left out in the cold slightly.”

Iain also said the characters will be permanently changed by this experience, so could divorce be on the cards for Steve and Tracy?

Viewers will remember back in January, Tracy had a one-night stand with Paula Martin (Stirling Gallacher) as she felt neglected by her husband.

When he finally discovered the truth, Steve tried his best to get their marriage back on track by attending couples counselling and making more family time.

However, Oliver’s diagnosis now means he’ll be spending more time at the hospital and with the other mother of his child.

Unable to stand by and be second place once more, will the feisty character call time on their relationship for good?

Coronation Street continues Monday at 7:30pm on ITV.
