Coronation Street spoilers: Maria Connor’s future destroyed as ‘tragedy’ strikes cobbles

Maria (played by Samia Longchambon) has had one of the most turbulent relationship histories of any character on Coronation Street, having had multiples romances and several doomed marriages. Just when the hairdresser thought her luck had finally run out, along came charming Gary Windass (Mikey North) to give her and son Liam Connor (Charlie Wrenshall) a brand new life. Little did she know, her new beau had become the latest supervillain to terrorise the residents of Weatherfield and has caused the deaths of four characters so far. As their big day dawns and the unlucky-in-love mother-of-one looks set to turn over a new leaf, could her future happiness be destroyed before her very eyes as her groom is exposed for the fiend he is on the ITV soap?

The stalwart arrived on the cobbles in 2000, catching the eyes of several male residents including the likes of Tyrone Hobbs (Alan Halsall) and Jason Grimshaw (Ryan Thomas).

Though, it was handsome heartthrob Liam Connor (Rob James-Collier) who popped the question the first time around when she discovered she was pregnant with his child.

Unfortunately, the stalwart suffered a miscarriage and although she went on to fall pregnant again, a cruel twist of fate saw her husband killed in a hit-and-run.

Another doomed proposal by former villain Tony Gordon (Gray O’Brien) and several romances later, the hairdresser found herself in an illegal marriage when she tied the knot with Pablo Duarte (Shai Matheson) in order to get him a visa for the UK.

Having suffered so much turmoil, Maria might have finally thought things would be different with Gary, but as time ticks by, it seems her future on the cobbles is set to mirror her devastating past.

After entering into a relationship with Gary last year, the mother-of-one became the centre of a love triangle with her boyfriend and former lover, Ali Neeson (James Burrows).

As the latter tried to warn his ex-girlfriend about what her current beau was really up to, she didn’t listen, but the events of Christmas Day led her to discover he was a loan shark.

Promising to give up his criminal enterprise, the supervillain’s girlfriend took him back and it wasn’t long before she discovered she was pregnant.

Again, a cruel twist of fate saw her suffer a second miscarriage, but this only brought the pair closer and they became engaged.

Speaking to press, including, executive producer Iain MacLeod teased what’s to come as the truth about Gary draws ever closer to being revealed.

Referring to the introduction of Rick’s daughter, Kelly Neelan (Millie Gibson), which has led the villain on edge, the soap boss explained: “Unfortunately, that arouses a certain degree of suspicion in some of his rivals on the street, who start to think, ‘Well, what on earth is he got to do with this kid?’

“And then when they discover this rich kid, suspicions go into overdrive in a way that sort of precipitates a massive explosion in Gary and Sarah [Platt] and Adam’s lives in the run-up to Gary and Maria’s wedding, which will be going out sometime later in the summer.”

Therefore, as the husband and wife-to-be get ready for their wedding day, could Adam’s investigation lead the police to make an arrest?

To make it even more dramatic, the authorities could turn up as the pair are exchanging their vows, really putting a damper on Maria’s big day.

After all the heartbreak she has suffered in the past, the hairdresser would be desperate for this wedding to go to plan.

As she contemplates whether or not to stand by her man, the mother-of-one could decide her history of troubled romances are a sign she should move on.

Will the soap stalwart pack up her’s and Liam’s belongings and bid farewell to the cobbles once and for all?
