Coronavirus Self-Employment Income Support Scheme opens today – how to apply

“An estimated two million self-employed people are ineligible for any help from the government. Those who earn too little, too much, started freelancing too late, or took time out to support children or loved ones: they’ve been left high and dry. Without help from SEISS or otherwise, millions of businesses, homes and families are at stake.
“The Chancellor has, quite rightly, massively extended the furlough scheme. Yet nothing more is forthcoming for the self-employed. For many freelancers, there are no glimmers of hope. Without greatly increased, backdated financial aid they don’t stand a chance of weathering this storm.
“Otherwise, we’re on course for mass bankruptcies, insolvencies, and the decimation of the UK’s creative workforce. The government cannot continue to support employees who happen to be on payroll without also addressing the wholly inadequate support system put in place for the freelance and self-employed. We urge them to act, fast.”
Officials have told the BBC the value of claims made via the SEISS system so far have reached more than £340million.
