The eternal debate over which player is better has followed Ronaldo and Messi for a decade as they dominated the world of football.
In their 35 matches against each other, Messi leads with 16 goals compared to Ronaldo’s 10.
Both players have also scored over 600 goals in all competitions.
Ronaldo is the all-time top goalscorer in the Champions League with Messi in second.
For ten years, they also dominated the Ballon d’Or award until 2018 when Luka Modric broke their duopoly.
Mourinho managed Ronaldo at Real Madrid and has come up against Barcelona star Messi on several occasions.
But the former Chelsea and Manchester United boss says it is unfair to pick one player from the rivalry.
“I think it is unfair to both of them when someone says one is better than the other one,” he told beIN SPORTS.
“I think they are just different.
“The only thing that I can say is that when I had Ronaldo on my side I was a very happy man.
“And when I had to play against Messi I had to think a lot to try and help my team to have chances to succeed.
“The thing to admire is the number of years that they have stayed at the top.
“To win once, it can happen. To win and win and win and win and win is much more difficult.
“As a player you can appear like a hurricane and then disappear.
“These two guys have been there for ten years and everything is about them until the moment they decide enough is enough and other people can raise the bar.”
