Whately explained: “What was said at all times, under the scientific guidance on what is a safe thing to do and the right thing to do, is that we wanted to try and get primary school students back to school first.
“But, we have always been clear that that needs to be done step-by-step and carefully and looking at the context and infection rate.
“And as people have said, getting children to socially distance isn’t necessarily an easy thing to do.”
Louise mentioned that this sudden change in plans was very “confusing” and Whately explained it was always going to come down to getting the balance right and when teachers believe it will be safe to return.
There should be clearer guidance later today when Gavin Williamson explains in further detail.
