Driving tests AXED and rescheduled as DVSA takes coronavirus precautions

Driving tests have been cancelled for the next two days while extra contingency plans are put into place to deal with the pandemic. The group says learner drivers would automatically have their test rebooked as soon as it is possible to do so.

Candidates whose tests have been cancelled with less than three days notice can claim a refund through out of pocket expense claims.

Tests will still be made available for those who need to pass for critical reasons such as prospective NHS staff.

A DVSA spokesperson said the shutdown was less a result of staff shortages and more to prevent the spread of the lethal disease.

A statement said: “We are working to put contingency plans in place to help reduce the spread of COVID-19, including suspending driver and vehicle tests for an initial period of two days from 19/3/2020.”

Tom Hixon, Head of Instructor Support at Bill Plant said: “We trust the DVSA will take this time to consider their ongoing approach to driving tests moving forwards and ensuring that the safety of the students, driving instructors and examiners is at the forefront of everything that happens.

“Waiting times at Test Centres will always vary. Your driving instructor will always be best placed to advise on this and will manage this with their pupils accordingly.

“Positively, it will allow the pupils to have more time to practise and perfect their safe driving skills – whether that be with their qualified Driving Instructor or through private practice with their family.”

The driving school claims they have still experienced high demand for driving lessons but reassured students hygiene procedures were being followed for safety reasons.

Mr Hixon added: “Our Driving Instructors are following the relevant hygiene measures as stated by the NHS.

“Alongside further in-car protocols such as clean the steering wheel, gear stick and outdoor handle before and after each lesson.”

However, those who have been forced to rearrange their test could not hide their disappointment on social media.

Jade Tranter said: “Driving test cancelled. Finally get the confidence to book and completely prepare for it and it gets cancelled. CAN THIS CORONAVIRUS F*** OFF PLS”.
