Elvis Presley children: Was Elvis a good father to Lisa Marie? ‘Wasn’t hands-on’
Elvis Presley had Lisa Marie, his only daughter, with Priscilla in 1968. Lisa Marie was only nine-years-old when her father died in 1977. Elvis’ death shocked and upset a huge number of fans, but none more so than his daughter and ex-wife.
Was Elvis Presley a good father?
Lisa Marie has expressed her feelings about her father, which gives an insight into her feelings about The King.
Speaking to Variety, she said she felt her childhood adoration for her father has been “locked in” despite her understanding him better now she is an adult.
She said: “I think it [childhood adoration] gets locked in forever and nothing can change it.
“And then, on the other side, I’m going through what I’ve dealt with, and I know what he’s gone through, and the older I get, the more I can relate to the obstacles that he had and the trepidations that he had.
“I can relate to them more, way more. I understand more as I get older.
“He was quite young [when he died]. So I can’t say I knew a whole lot at 42, or that I know a whole lot now. But what I know is that I don’t know everything.
“I know that he went through a lot and… I always have that sort of in my head. It’s always there.
In an interview with The Guardian, she said: “Elvis wasn’t a hands-on dad. And living at Graceland was difficult but I knew when I got married that he was going to have his guys around all the time.
“I could not domesticate Elvis, and I accepted that. He didn’t really have that much to do with the practical stuff but I took naturally to becoming a mother.
“I thought, ‘My God, this is a product of Elvis and me and I’m going to be there for her.’ The moment you have the child, everything changes.
“It is terrifying and it is beautiful and it changed my life and it brought Elvis and me closer together.”
Priscilla said she was “the disciplinarian” with Lisa Marie, and that even after her divorce from Elvis, he still spent “plenty of time” with his daughter before he died.
