The institution’s top eurocrat revealed officials are working on a facility in Brussels to deliver Covid jabs to MEPs, staff and assistants who are at risk from the virus. Similar centres could be opened in Strasbourg and Luxembourg where the Parliament also has official premises. Klaus Welle, the Parliament’s secretary-general, said officials are working with “Belgian health authorities” to open the first vaccination centre.
A note from Mr Welle stated that officials “are working to set up a vaccination centre in Brussels”.
The German explained that roll-out of the jabs would follow Belgium’s “phase 1b” of the country’s domestic vaccination strategy.
Under the plan, MEPs and staff over 65 would be eligible to receive the jab at the Parliament’s facility, which “will be designed to optimise people’s safety”.
Vaccinations will also be offered to those over 45 if they have pre-existing medical conditions, such as “obesity, diabetes, hypertension, cardiovascular, lung, kidney and liver disease or recent cancers”.
The facility will be funded by EU taxpayers who already support the private medical care of MEPs.
It is not yet clear whether the doses will be secured from the EU’s joint vaccine scheme, which has heavily criticised for slow roll-outs.
Mr Welle announced the Parliament was also working on a “solidarity” project to help offer jabs to the general public.
“Talks are also ongoing with the Brussels region to provide additional space for their vaccination centres on the EP premises,” according to the Politico website, his note said.
“A final location is still to be determined.”
Belgium is hoping to offer jabs to 70 percent of its population by the end of the summer.
Care home residents and staff, health care workers are top of the list to receive a Covid vaccination.
In March, they will shift strategy to offer jabs to over 65s and at-risk over 45s.
They are also allowed to request a swab if they are planning to leave.
In a memo officials pleaded to keep the details secret.
Romanian MEP Cristian Terhes said: “It’s scandalous the EU is a racket to take money off the taxpayer to give its employees a pampered lifestyle.”
