For the first time since 1989, Everton head into the Merseyside derby above their neighbours in the table. The Toffees have won their opening four fixtures, while champions Liverpool suffered a shock 7-2 defeat at Aston Villa last time out.
The Reds, though, are on a club record run of 22 unbeaten matches in all competitions against Everton.
Jurgen Klopp‘s side have also won seven and drawn four matches against their city rivals since the German took charge in 2015.
“I have lost enough derbies in my life to know how it feels so I don’t need that experience to be honest,” said Klopp.
“We always respected Everton and that is what we do this time, for a good reason because they are a good team and this season they look especially good.
“But the 237th Merseyside derby (203rd in the league) isn’t quite as cut and dried as all that.
“Goodison derby matches – with or without spectators – have followed a recent trend.
“Seven of the last eight at Goodison Park have been draws. Four of the last six have finished goalless – a sequence that was heading for five out of six until Sadio Mane’s 94th minute winner in 2016. The other in that list ended 1-1.
“The odds makers have clearly been seduced by the goal-laden start to the Premier League season – a record breaking average of 3.79 goals per game – while Everton and Liverpool have put even that statistic in the shade!
