A cloth face covering should cover your mouth and nose while allowing you to breathe comfortably, and a pleated mask stretches enough to do this. While the Government says a face covering can be as simple as a scarf or bandana tied around your face, a more secure mask can be made in a few simple steps. Express.co.uk consulted experts on the web to find out how to make a pleated face mask.
Pick a woven fabric, that doesn’t have any stretch in it.
A piece of woven fabric is less permeable, so it will ensure the mask won’t loose its shape.
Set your fabric out flat on a clean surface.
You can use a template or pattern and cut around that, or alternatively follow these instructions.
Cut a piece of fabric 10” long by 8″ wide.
Then, cut two pieces of fabric 7 1/2″ long by 5 1/2″ wide.
For the ties, you need two pieces of fabric 1 1/4″ wide by 36″ long. Cut these out from a piece of fabric.
Fold the fabric widthwise twice. Then, sew down the length of the fabric.
Do this with both pieces of fabric.
Turn the pleated mask face down, and place a fabric tie on one side of the mask, where the main fabric extends past the lining.
Fold the main fabric excess over the tie twice. Hold the rolled fabric and sew along it. Repeat this, and then do the other side.
Try off the excess threat and press the mask to create clear pleats.
