Fleury continues win streak to book playoff spot at Olympic curling trials

The playoff picture started to come into focus Thursday at Canada’s Olympic curling trials.

Round-robin leaders Brad Gushue and Tracy Fleury posted victories to secure berths for weekend play. Gushue moved to 6-1 with a 10-1 rout of Tanner Horgan and Fleury remained unbeaten at 6-0 with an 11-7 win over Laura Walker.

Fleury can lock up the first seed in the women’s draw on Thursday evening with a win over Casey Scheidegger.

Rachel Homan beat Jennifer Jones 7-5, Krista McCarville edged Kelsey Rocque 8-7 and Scheidegger topped Jacqueline Harrison 7-6 in morning play at SaskTel Centre.

The top three teams in the nine-team standings will advance.

Kerry Einarson and Scheidegger were at 3-3 while Walker, Homan and Harrison were clinging to faint playoff hopes at 2-4. Rocque fell to 1-5 and will not make the cut.

In the other afternoon men’s games, Brad Jacobs picked up a key 8-2 victory over Kevin Koe to move into sole possession of second place. Jacobs improved to 5-1 and Koe fell into a third-place tie with Mike McEwen, who beat John Epping 6-2.

Jason Gunnlaugson nearly scored three to force an extra end but a measure confirmed a deuce in a 7-6 loss to Brendan Bottcher.

Epping fell to 3-3 and Gunnlaugson was 2-4. Bottcher (2-5), Horgan (1-5) and the idle Matt Dunstone (1-5) have been eliminated from playoff contention.

Tiebreakers (if needed) and semifinals will be played Saturday and the finals are scheduled for Sunday. The Beijing Games are set for Feb. 4-20.
