Flights: Flight attendant reveals the dirtiest areas on a plane – and it’s not the toilet

Cabin crew have previously uncovered many different facts about planes that would disgust passengers if they knew the truth. One plane could see a number of flights daily and with the airline under constant pressure to ensure each flight leaves on time, the aircraft may not be as clean as you might think.

Planes are not known for being the cleanest of places on the planet but a flight attendant recently took to Reddit to explain just how dirty a plane may be.

One flight attendant has revealed that passengers should never use the pockets attached to the seat in front.

The cabin crew member explained: “They are cleared of rubbish but are never cleaned.

“Dirty tissues, sick bags, knickers, socks, people’s feet (rest in pocket), gum, half sucked sweets, apple cores…and then next flight you go and put your phone/laptop/iPad in there.”

Jason recommends avoiding putting your face down on the tray table to sleep, and never playing food directly on the table surface before eating.

This can be concerning for travellers, however, there are many things you can do while flying that can help stop the spread of bacteria.

Another member of the cabin crew took to Reddit to explain how dirty the trays on planes are.

The user explained that they are deep cleaned between journeys, however this has to be done within a short period of time due to keeping flights on time and therefore they may not be cleaned as well as they should be.

The user said that most surfaces are sprayed with a diluted disinfectant spray which may not kill all of the germs found on a tray.

The cabin crew insider said: “Do not, under any circumstances put your food directly on the food trays.

“Those sprays were also used to wipe the little tables. Again, it was heavily diluted and probably didn’t actually “clean” the tables how it should have.”

Washing hands with soap and water is always advised, as well as carrying hand sanitiser which can help disinfect trays.

Even carrying disinfectant wipes to wipe down the trays before eating off of them can be useful.

The flight attendant added that the toilets are also among one of the dirtiest places on the airplane.

Toilets are in use all the time on a flight and with hundreds of passengers on one flight at a time, there are only usually around two toilets to use.

They wrote: “Please do not ever walk into a toilet with bare feet.”

The comment added that toilets are only deep cleaned only at the end of a route which can cause germs to build up in the cubicle.

You can practise good hygiene in the plane toilet by using hand sanitiser after touching the flush button, door handle and other high traffic spots in the bathroom.
