Florida records 15,300 coronavirus cases in ONE day in highest-ever total of any US state

The state of Florida, on America’s east coast, has reported 15,300 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours – the highest single-day total of any US state. The surge in cases breaks the previous record by nearly 4,000.

Today’s shocking daily rise meant that if Florida were a country, it would rank fourth in the world for the most new cases in a day behind the United States, Brazil and India, according to analysis by Reuters news agency.

The state, which is a popular holiday destination, had already surpassed the highest daily tally by any European country during the heigh of the pandemic there.

Florida has also broken New York state’s record of 12,847 new COVID-19 cases on April 10 when it was the epicenter of the US outbreak.

The record rise in cases comes just a day after Walt Disney World Orlando reopened.

Two of the parks reopened on Saturday, with guests being subject to a series of safety measures, such as temperature tests and wearing masks.

Florida isn’t the only US state to see a rise in coronavirus cases in recent weeks, with infections rising in about 40 percent of states, according to Reuters – who analysed cases over the past two weeks and compared it with the prior two weeks.

Other states at the centre of the outbreak include Arizona, California and Texas – where the number of coronavirus hospitalisations are on the rise.

This week the US has broken global records, by registering about 60,000 new cases a day nationwide for the last four days in a row.

The US has recorded the most coronavirus cases and deaths in the world.

The country has reported over 3.3million and 137,000 deaths.
