The hugely popular Fortnite game has just been banned from both the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. That means you can currently download the title on any iPhone or Android devices. The block came into force after Fortnite’s creators, Epic games, changed the way in-app purchases were made inside the game meaning Apple and Google are now unable to take their usual percentage cut.
Apple takes 30 percent of everything a developer makes but Epic says this saving will be passed onto gamers. Clearly, that’s not pleased the US technology firm which is why it felt it had now choice but to remove the app.
So what happens if you love playing this game on your smartphone?
Epic says that any iPhone owners who already have the app installed should be able to continue using the game but won’t receive any future updates while the ban is in place.
Android users have a similar issue although this more open platform does allow games to be installed that aren’t on the Play Store so it’s possible that new versions could be added to devices.
How long the ban will rumble on for is unknown but the none of those involved will want to back down, especially Apple.
If they give into Epic it will open the floodgates to more developers wanting to keep all of the money they make from purchases inside the apps.
In a statement, Apple said “Today, Epic Games took the unfortunate step of violating the App Store guidelines that are applied equally to every developer and designed to keep the store safe for our users. As a result their Fortnite app has been removed from the store. Epic enabled a feature in its app which was not reviewed or approved by Apple, and they did so with the express intent of violating the App Store guidelines regarding in-app payments that apply to every developer who sells digital goods or services.”
And, speaking to The Verge, a Google spokesperson added: “The open Android ecosystem lets developers distribute apps through multiple app stores. For game developers who choose to use the Play Store, we have consistent policies that are fair to developers and keep the store safe for users,”
“While Fortnite remains available on Android, we can no longer make it available on Play because it violates our policies. However, we welcome the opportunity to continue our discussions with Epic and bring Fortnite back to Google Play.”
