With rumours suggesting that Rockstar Games is preparing to reveal GTA 6 in 2020, fans are hoping that they will be finding out the release date, among other details, in the coming months. If the development team shared something in 2020, we would expect the announcement to include details on what platforms it was planned for and the final location, or locations, of the game. And while March could still see interesting news revealed about the future of the Grand Theft Auto franchise, the latest analyst predictions suggest the game will hit shelves in 2021.
The biggest gaming news shared by Rockstar’s parent company Take-Two Interactive so far this year was the new multi-year partnership between The National Football League (NFL) and 2K, which will mean new NFL games in the future.
The partnership marks the return of football-themed games to 2K’s stable of sports titles and original IP, but isn’t expected to have any impact on when the next Grand Theft Auto game is released.
However, the first game could arrive in the same calendar year as GTA 6. According to the Daily Star, equity research firm Jeffries hosted an expert call earlier this year with industry expert, Darion Lowenstein.
Lowenstein has experience of Rockstar’s workings and suggests that 2021 is the earliest we could see the next Grand Theft Auto game.
“As a former Rockstar employee, Darion noted that the Houser brothers place all their emphasis on game quality rather than hitting a deadline,” a press release explains.
“His absolute best-case-scenario for a game release is Holiday 2021, though he does not expect an announcement/trailer anytime soon.
“We’ve seen online rumours and have heard client speculation that a trailer could drop as early as next month, but Darion’s take is that investors / gamers will have to wait longer.”
However, while that’s a good sign that some big news is probably coming in 2020, Investor Place doesn’t expect to see any big reveals from Take-Two Interactive – the parent company of Rockstar Games – for the launch of the PS5 and Xbox Series X.
Instead, they are also predicting the GTA 6 release date arriving in 2021, with their latest report explaining: “The company’s various developers and studios will undoubtedly have some titles ready for the new console launches.
“But it’s unlikely that TTWO’s biggest franchises will have new titles there in time for the launch.
“Red Dead Redemption 2 was just released in October 2018. And while Grand Theft Auto V is long in the tooth — it was released way back in 2013 — GTA VI seems unlikely to arrive in 2020.
“However, 2021 is a definite possibility, and by then there will be an installed base of new console owners desperate for next generation mayhem.”
With the past two mainline GTA games set in Liberty City and San Andreas, the general consensus is that GTA 6 will go back to the Miami-inspired Vice City.
However, despite its popularity with long-time GTA fans, not everybody wants a return to the iconic location.
Following the recent appearance of a GTA 6 concept video set in London, the majority of Grand Theft Auto fans want the game to be set in the UK.
In a DX poll with more than 3,200 votes (counted on March 15), a whopping 1,454 said that GTA 6 should be set in London.
That’s compared to just 720 votes for Vice City, 372 votes for Tokyo, and 336 votes for somewhere else entirely.
Perhaps surprisingly, a return to San Andreas managed 261 votes, while Liberty City received 127 votes.
The numbers are correct at the time of writing, although we’ve kept the poll open in case you’re not happy with the results and want to have your say.
GTA London remains a fan favourite, even if you did have to switch discs to play the game and avoid becoming Brown Bread.
But the chances that GTA 6 will be confirmed as being set in the UK seem very unlikely at this point.
However, that doesn’t mean Rockstar Games shouldn’t think big and put together some exciting DLC for the game.
Spin-offs can prove very popular, even if they remain limited to multiplayer modes, like with GTA Online.
