High blood pressure – three of the best exercises to prevent deadly hypertension

High blood pressure is a common condition that affects more than 25 per cent of all adults in the UK. The condition, which is also known as hypertension, puts extra pressure on your blood vessels and vital organs. You could lower your risk of hypertension by eating a healthy, balanced diet, and by doing regular exercise. One of the best exercises to lower your risk of high blood pressure is cycling, it’s been revealed.

Regularly going cycling is a great way to improve your overall health and avoid high blood pressure, said charity Blood Pressure UK.

It’s a type of aerobic activity, which uses the large muscle groups of the body, it said.

These types of exercises include repetitive and rhythmic movements, and they help to improve the heart and blood vessels.

“Different kinds of exercise and activity have different effects on your body,” said Blood Pressure UK.

“If you have high blood pressure, you should try to focus on activities that will help your heart and blood vessels. Aerobic activity is the type that helps your heart the most.

“Aerobic activities are repetitive and rhythmic movements (exercises), and they use the large muscle groups of your body, such as those in your legs, shoulders and arms.

“Other forms of activity are less helpful. For example, you should not do any exercise that is very intensive for short periods of time, such as sprinting or weightlifting.

“These kinds of activities will quickly raise your blood pressure, and put unwanted strain on your heart and blood vessels.”

Swimming and jogging are other great types of aerobic activity that could lower your risk of high blood pressure.

But, you should avoid doing weight lifting or squash, as it could quick raise your heart rate, which may be damaging if you have hypertension.

If you choose to go skydiving or scuba diving, it’s important to speak to a doctor first, added the charity.

High blood pressure is often known as ‘the silent killer’, as many people may have hypertension without knowing it.

That’s because the symptoms only show themselves if you have extremely high blood pressure.

Common high blood pressure symptoms include persistent headaches, finding blood in your urine, and having a pounding in your chest.

It’s crucial that hypertension is diagnosed early, as the condition raises the risk of some deadly complications, including heart attacks and strokes.

Everyone over the age of 40 years old should check their blood pressure at least once every five years.
