Holidays destinations in Europe are a handy overseas adventure for Britons. Usually promising warmer weather than on home turf, they are also suitable for short mini breaks or lengthy sun-soaked vacations due to their close proximity. According to the FCO: “There’s a heightened threat of terrorist attack globally against UK interests and British nationals, from groups or individuals motivated by the conflict in Iraq and Syria. “You should be vigilant at this time.”
While most trips to European countries pass without a hitch, some are classed by the FCO as more dangerous than others.
Therefore, they have offered detailed travel advice on each individual European country, and its threat from terror.
Express.co.uk has collated the detail into a handy map, so travellers can have a quick reference point of the safest destinations in 2019.
There are four changes from the 2018 list.
The four countries in question are Switzerland, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and Norway.
All have seen their terror threat reduced from likely to can’t be ruled out.
VERY LIKELY TERROR THREAT LOCATIONS
Many much-loved European holiday destinations are, unfortunately, considered very likely to suffer a terror attack, according to the FCO.
This list has not changed from 2018.
It features France, Germany, Russia and Turkey as well as Belgium.
The UK’s terror threat is also considered severe, according to MI5.
The FCO website stated of Turkey attacks: “Most terrorist attacks have taken place in the south and east of the country and in Ankara and Istanbul.
“While there is a potential that citizens from western countries may be targets or caught up in attacks, particularly in the major cities, attacks are most likely to target the Turkish state, civilians and demonstrations.”
Meanwhile for Germany, it added attacks could be “indiscriminate” and involve public places visited by foreigners.
Countries classified as ‘Very Likely’ to face terror threat:
LIKELY TERROR THREAT LOCATIONS
This is the second largest category according to the FCO.
Countries encompassed under the likely umbrella include Spain, Denmark, Italy and Kosovo.
Talking of the potential of an attack in Austria, the website states: “Terrorists are likely to try to carry out attacks in Austria.
“Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places frequented by expatriates and foreign travellers.
“You should be vigilant and follow the advice of local authorities.”
