John Lennon’s Imagine is a very important, political message in a song. It changed people’s view of Lennon’s musical work and has been an anthem for many since. But why have celebrities been singing Imagine on Instagram?
The trend started with Gal Gadot, who posted a video singing the song.
The video suddenly was more than just her, as her various celebrity friends filmed themselves singing the song also, and lines were strung together for the whole song.
Explaining her reason behind it, Gadot said: “Day Six in self-quarantine and I’ve got to say, the past few days have got me feeling a bit philosophical.
“This virus has affected the entire world – everyone – doesn’t matter who you are, where you’re from. We’re all in this together.
“And I saw, I ran into this video of this Italian guy playing the trumpet on his balcony to all the other people who were locked inside their homes.
“And he was playing Imagine and there was something so hopeful and pure about this video.
“And it goes something like this.”
Celebrity singers included Cara Delevingne, Will Ferrell, Natalie Portman, Jamie Dornan and Kristen Wiig.
This video has since had some copycats, but one in particular has delighted UK fans.
Comedian Joe Lycett, now known as Hugo Boss after he changed his name by deed poll in protest against the fashion house, decided to get his friends together.
Lycett joined comedians from the UK, including Paul Chuckle, Noel Fielding and Katherine Ryan, to sing their own rendition of the song.
However, their version ensured every singer replaced at least one word with “b*ds” in a hilarious way to mock Gal Gadot’s efforts.
Imagine, the song by John Lennon from his 1971 album of the same name, is an iconic song covered by artists including Lady Gaga, Elton John, Diana Ross and Madonna.
The song peaked at Number Three when it was released, however, it soared to the top of the chart and remained there for some time after Lennon’s murder in 1980.
The song was written by himself, his wife Yoko Ono and produced with Phil Spector, a producer who is one of the most influential in the music industry despite retiring from public life in the 1980s.
Imagine has continued to be a hugely influential song, clearly even touching the hearts of celebrities during the global pandemic.
