Kate Middleton and William adopt ‘complete change' from 'never explain' era amid rebrand

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge launched their own YouTube channel last week. The couple published a slick promotional video showing themselves relaxing on a sofa at their home in Norfolk.

However, a royal expert has claimed that Kate and William have got themselves into a “petty transatlantic popularity contest” with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been accused of changing the expectations of modern royals.

Since stepping back as senior royals, Meghan and Harry have established their own charity and become involved in several major projects.

Royal author Duncan Larcome told Fabulous magazine: “Whether William and Kate like it or not, they are now international players in a transatlantic popularity contest with their own flesh and blood.

According to Vanity Fair’s Katie Nicholl, sources close to the Cambridges have said the couple “are focused on their digital efforts, and have worked hard to build a successful social media campaign which has seen them amass millions of followers around the globe”.

Kate and William’s YouTube channel has already attracted 505,000 subscribers and the first teaser trailer was watched by 3.3 million viewers.

Ms Nicholl said within the Cambridge team “there has been a concerted effort to make the content more frequent, personal and informative”.

A source told the royal expert: “The move to social media has been on the cards for a long time, it was always going to be the future for the royals as well, but the pandemic has accelerated things.

“It has been a blessing in many ways for the royals in general because it means they are more in control of their public image than ever before.’”
