The Last of Us Part 2 looks fantastic, has a superb voice cast, and a stunning in-game world for players to explore.
What’s less clear is whether the Naughty Dog sequel will have that killer gameplay to match the high production values.
With the PS4 release date just a few weeks away, Naughty Dog has revealed more about what we can expect from the moment to moment gameplay.
According to co-director Anthony Newman, the enemy AI will be much improved in the sequel.
Indeed, it looks like Naughty Dog has fixed an annoying problem that crops up in most stealth games.
“In Last of Us 2, we introduced this middle state that honored the fact that if someone witnessed their friend getting killed with an arrow in front of them, of course they’re gonna be alerted, they know someone did that,” Newman told Ungeek.
“But they shouldn’t know exactly where it came from. There’s this kind of middle state of ‘vague awareness.’ So when you play the game, you’ll hear enemies say something like ‘I think it came from over there,’ so they’re kind of uncertain about your location, but they have a pretty good idea of where you are.”
I’ve always found it annoying when enemies can suddenly pinpoint your exact location based on one action.
Likewise, it’s always kind of silly when an enemy walks past a newly discovered dead body and doesn’t bat an eyelid.
“In the Last of Us 1, if you kill someone with a silent weapon like a bow and arrow, you’d have the expectation that no one would know where you were.
“But if someone saw their friend die, we call it ‘witnessing a silent kill’ — if they witness a silent kill, in Last of Us 1 they would immediately know where you were.
“It’s because in that game, we only had two states, enemies either didn’t know where you were at all or they knew exactly where you were.”
News like this makes the wait for The Last of Us Part 2 even more unbearable.
The Naughty Dog sequel takes place five years after the original game, as the survivors settle in Wyoming.
“After a deadly journey across post-pandemic USA, Ellie and Joel settle down in Wyoming,” reads the official description.
“Living in a thriving community gives them stability, despite the threat of the Infected and desperate survivors.
“When a violent event disrupts the peace, Ellie begins a relentless journey for justice. Hunting those responsible, she’s confronted by devastating physical and emotional repercussions of her actions.”
The full game will be available to purchase from July 19, exclusively for PS4.
