A massive explosion has been reported in the Lebanese capital of Beirut, and video footage shows a giant column of smoke rising over the city. Lebanon’s Health Minister Hamad Hasan said the explosion had caused a “very high number of injuries” and extensive damage.
Where is Beirut?
Beirut is the capital and largest city of Lebanon, a country in Western Asia.
No recent population census has been conducted, but 2007 estimates ranged from slightly more than 1 million to 2.2 million as part of Greater Beirut.
Located on a peninsula at the midpoint of Lebanon’s Mediterranean coast, Beirut is an important regional seaport.
But Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu disputed Hezbollah’s denial of any border incident, saying: “Hezbollah should know that it is playing with fire.”
He added: ”We will do what is necessary in order to defend ourselves.
“I suggest to all of them, including Hezbollah, to consider this.
“These are not vain words; they have the weight of the State of Israel and the IDF behind them and this should be taken seriously.”
