Liverpool midfielder Gini Wijnaldum has slammed Everton star Jordan Pickford for his tackle on Virgil van Dijk which will see the Dutchman miss the rest of the season through injury.
Pickford escaped punishment for knee-high horror tackle on the centre-back during Saturday’s Merseyside derby.
Van Dijk will has undergone surgery on an ACL issue which will require many months of rehab.
And Wijnaldum is not happy with Pickford for the tackle which seriously dampen’s Liverpool’s hopes of defending their Premier League title.
“Of course we are upset,” Wijnaldum fumed. “The way Pickford went into the challenge was completely, in my opinion, stupid.
“I believe that he didn’t want to injure Virgil the way he injured him but the way he took the tackle, he didn’t care about what happened after the tackle.
On the affect Van Dijk’s absence will have on the title challenge, Wijnaldum said: “People say that because Virgil is really important to our team. He has showed that since he came into the club.
“He had really big performances and is important not only on the pitch, but a leader inside the team.
“Since he came in we had really good results but it is up to us to show we can still but in good performances without Virgi.
“This is a situation we haven’t dealt with before but this is what we have to do right now.”
