Luis Figo explains why Man Utd made good decision with Bruno Fernandes transfer

Manchester United have made a “good” decision by signing Bruno Fernandes, Portugal legend Luis Figo believes. The Red Devils signed the midfielder last month from Portuguese giants Sporting Lisbon.

After chasing his signature for over 18 months, United signed the Portugal international for an initial fee of £47million – though that sum could rise to £67million.

United’s acquisition of Fernandes saw them acquire the services of the Primeira Liga’s best player, who scored 15 goals and provided 14 assists in 28 appearances before ending his love affair with Sporting.

Figo is a big fan of his fellow countryman and believes he’ll be a massive success at Old Trafford.

“He is one of the best football players in Portugal,” the former Real Madrid and Barcelona midfielder said of Fernandes during an appearance on Sky Sports.

“He is a different player, he is not a striker [but] a midfielder,” Figo said.

“In these days the market is not so big so it is difficult to find players because everyone is looking for that and the production of talent is not as huge as in other generations.

“So sometimes you have to buy different players.”

Fernandes, 24, has signed a five-and-a-half year deal with United and is desperate to help bring the glory days back to the Theatre of Dreams.

“My love of Manchester United really started when I used to watch Cristiano Ronaldo play and ever since then I have been a big fan of this great club,” Fernandes said.

“I have worked hard to get to this moment and I can promise the fans that I will give everything for the badge to help bring us more success and trophies.

“I want to thank Sporting for everything they have done for me. It is surreal to hear the nice words that have been said about me from players that used to play for this team.”

Fernandes and his Manchester United team-mates will be back in action on Monday night, travelling to Stamford Bridge to take on Chelsea.
