Emergency services arrived on the M25 at the QEII Bridge to help bring a woman to safety, Essex Police said. Officers held traffic clockwise between junction 31 for Lakeside and junction 1A for Swanscombe, appealing to the patience of motorists as they attended the scene.
Essex Police wrote on Twitter: “We have closed the QEII bridge from #Essex into #Kent following concerns for the safety of a woman.
“We are currently on scene and the incident is ongoing.
“Drivers will be taken through the east bore tunnel. We’ll update you as soon as we can.
The right tunnel was also closed to divert the traffic.
Highways England warned motorists to “expect delays” as police tend to the incident.
They wrote on Twitter: “#QueenElizabethIIBridge Traffic has been held on the bridge due to a police-led incident.
“Expect delays #M25 #DartfordCrossing #QEIIBRIDGE Essex Road Policing on scene.”
The company added shortly after they were cooperating with police officers, writing: “QE2 Bridge #M25 #Clockwise traffic is currentley held why we help our colleagues at Essex Police deal with an ongoing incident @DartCharge.”
The woman was quickly “brought to safety”, as announced by police at approximately 4pm.
They wrote on Twitter: “We have now brought the woman to safety and bridge is re-opening.
“We appreciate your patience, understanding and compassion.”
But motorists were warned delays may continue.
Highways England wrote on Twitter: “#QueenElizabethIIBridge Traffic has been released on the bridge after police led incident, expect residual delays in the area. #M25 #DartfordCrossing”
This comes only two days after Dartford Crossing had to be shut as a man “threatened to jump” from it.
Following the QEII bridge closure on Friday, motorists queued for several miles to junction 29 for Romford, A13 in both directions to the M25, A1306 through Purfleet and all through Lakeside.
