Man Utd axe two players from Premier League squad that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants sold

Manchester United have left Phil Jones and Sergio Romero out of their 25-man Premier League squad for the current season, increasing speculation that both or either will be sold. United want £20million for Jones, while Romero is pining for a move to America.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has made his intentions clear with his squad selection for the upcoming season.

The Red Devils head coach included Marcos Rojo in the squad, despite speculation linking him with a move away from the club.

The Argentine spent last season on loan at Estudiantes, but the two clubs were unable to agree terms on an extension or permanent move.

With Solskjaer’s options at the back limited, Rojo was included in the 25-man list for the season, but there was no room for Jones.

The former Blackburn defender was one of the players United were eager to sell this summer to free up funds for a move for Jadon Sancho.

However, there were no clubs interested in taking him on, and he still has three years to run on his current contract – with a year’s extension optional.

United have reportedly demanded a fee in the region of £20m for the defender, who hasn’t played for the club since January.

He found first-team minutes hard to come by last season, and started just seven games across all competitions.

Fulham were reportedly interested in signing him this summer, as they were on the hunt for a new centre-back following their promotion.

However, the £20m asking price put them off, considering his lack of game time this year.

Jones is said to be eager to stay at United and fight for his place, as he ultimately wants to represent England again in his career.

However, his omission from United’s 25-man squad shows there is little in the way of a promising future for him at Old Trafford.

The same can now be said for Romero, who appears likely to leave before long.

The goalkeeper was used as a back-up to David de Gea last season and was their recognised first-choice in cup competitions.

He looked impressive, too, but was left out of the side to face Sevilla in the Europa League semi-final, despite his heroics in helping them get to that stage of the competition.

Once Dean Henderson returned from his loan at Sheffield United this summer, he immediately ousted Romero in the pecking order and is now United’s second-choice to De Gea.

The English youngster signed a bumper new contract at Old Trafford and wanted assurances over game time, but is yet to play in the league this season.

Romero, however, has been linked with a move away sooner rather than later. With his contract set to expire next summer, United face losing him for free if he isn’t sold now or in January.

He is believed to be eager to go to the United States and sign for a Major League Soccer franchise, with their transfer window still open.

His omission from the Premier League squad all-but confirmed he will be sold at the earliest opportunity.
