Man Utd given food for thought after Pep Guardiola’s Ralf Rangnick comments

Pep Guardiola has heaped praise on Ralf Rangnick and claimed he is right up there with other elite German managers Jurgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel. And his comments may give Manchester United chiefs food for thought after the Spaniard gave them reason to hire Rangnick on a long-term basis.

Rangnick was appointed as United’s interim boss following the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

It is heavily believed that Rangnick has had an influence on some of Germany’s most successful bosses with his ‘gegenpress’ philosophy, such as Jurgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel – who manage English giants Liverpool and Chelsea respectively.

City boss Guardiola is credited with having an impact on Rangnick but played down those suggestions as he lavished praise on the United boss.

Rangnick recently claimed he could stay on as manager, though the club have agreed for him to take up a consultancy role after his stint in charge and are looking for a permanent successor.

He got off to a perfect start as United boss by leading them to victory over Crystal Palace and was complimentary of his players afterwards.

“Overall, I’m happy,” the German told United’s official website.

“I’m positively surprised how many things they brought on the pitch, bearing in mind we had not even a full training session yesterday.

“We had a few conversations with players individually and with the group of players. The first half-hour was amazing I thought, with high speed, high intensity, high tempo. We were always on the front foot during the game and the only thing missing in that part of the game was missing scoring one, two or even three goals.”
