‘Mask is slipping!’ Meghan didn’t look her ‘usual confident self’ but Kate was ‘powerful’

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry made a surprise appearance on Saturday evening when they joined Prince William and Kate Middleton on a walkabout outside Windsor Castle. Jesús Enrique Rosas, aka The Body Language Guy on YouTube, analysed the four royals’ body language, from getting out of the car to reading the tributes left for Queen Elizabeth II and interacting with the crowds. He noted how Meghan was not her “usual confident” self.

Prince William drove the four of them to the gates of Windsor Castle, where they were seen walking together toward the crowd.

Reviewing the footage, Jesús said: “Meghan was the last one to get out of the car – that’s interesting. Harry jumps out at once, maybe Meghan was expecting or waiting for someone to open the door.”

The expert them spotted a regular “gesture from Harry” – “always touching his jacket and buttons” which William mimicked on this occasion.

“William is also putting his hand over his tie. It’s like he’s trying to protect himself, he doesn’t feel comfortable. He looks confident in many ways but he’s making the same gesture as Harry. You could say he’s trying to connect with Harry to create empathy, but you have to look at the overall body language, so in this case, we’ll take it as a defensive posture,” Jesús added.

“Meghan is going for the handshake, good stride, nice handshake and posture, at that precise moment, Catherine was not amused, whatever is going on,” Jesús said about her facial expression.

As the four then walk towards the crowd, Jesús continues: “Catherine extremely natural, William is pressing his lips, bit uncomfortable, covering his belly again with his hand just like Harry, but William has much better posture. Meghan fixing her hair – a pacifying gesture, and of course that touching of Harry to Meghan which is a regular couple dynamic, not royal protocol but they are not royal anymore.”

Harry is then seen rubbing Meghan’s back with his thumb, which Jesús said was “a combined pacifying gesture – pacify Meghan and himself at the same time”.

Kate, however, is “walking just a bit ahead” of the others while “Meghan keeps fixing her hair and looking away from them”.

Jesús said: “This dynamic cannot be unseen!”

Overall, he explained how the four royals “had such tense body language all over the walkabout, especially William”.

“We know that William is a very tense man – I’ve mentioned that a couple of times, but this time he had his hands in fists and his jaw was tense at the same time. He tried to be a bridge between the two couples, but it’s obvious that he did not enjoy this.

“That mimics Meghan’s tension,” he adds suggesting the Duchess of Sussex isn’t relaxed because it’s reported, that they didn’t have much notice to attend and prepare, so they might’ve been “caught off guard”.

“And that’s how you can see Meghan’s mask slipping with all that tension in her neck and her jaw and that stare,” Jesús suggested.

“Their body language is also so detached from one another, especially Catherine who didn’t want anything to do with Meghan and Harry.”

The expert also spotted how “Meghan kept staring at Catherine” and wondered whether she was “trying to mimic Catherine or maybe she was trying to find some feedback from Catherine”.

At one point, the four were standing in a line reading the messages left on the flowers.

Kate was first on the left, William next to her, Meghan and then Harry on the right.

But at one point, Meghan reached for Harry and this gesture resulted in Harry swapping places with her.

Jesús said: “Notice this, Meghan turns around – she has a relaxed face – but she makes sure to reach and touch Harry… with nice pressure. She says something [to Harry], and he steps in between them.

“Meghan just did a very subtle gesture to put Harry between herself and the Prince and Princess of Wales.”

Harry then sidles up to his brother, with Meghan on his arm, but Jesús spots there was “no interaction between the couples”.

“It’s like they are by themselves,” he added. “The brothers are side by side, and they don’t acknowledge the existence of one another. Body language doesn’t lie.”
