After remaining shut for weeks in line with lockdown restrictions, McDonald’s has now reopened many of its restaurants. Demand for Big Mac’s has been huge, with queues across the country as fans rush to get their fix once again.
Images and videos of queues have circulated on social media, with one man camping in a drive-thru lane for four days before reopening at his local branch.
Restaurants closed back in March despite being allowed to stay open under lockdown rules due to safety concerns for staff and shortages of food.
At reopened restaurants there are a range of rules in place to ensure that things go smoothly and that staff and customers are safe, including contactless payments, staff wearing face masks and social distancing rules.
The McDonald’s website states: “As you know, McDonald’s already has high standards for cleanliness and routine cleaning of our restaurants has always been in place.
Safety measures that have been put in place to protect staff and customers include:
- Perspex screens and floor markings will be introduced in specific areas
- McDonald’s will provide additional protective equipment, including non-medical grade face masks
- All employees will be asked to confirm they are fit and able to work
- McDonald’s will use contactless thermometers and take staff temperatures on arrival before shifts
- McDonald’s will also be introducing social distancing measures for all of our delivery and service partners.
Opening hours have also been reduced – branches are open from 11am to 10pm.
Unfortunately, this means McDonald’s breakfasts won’t be available for a while.
In a statement before reopening, McDonald’s CEO for the UK and Ireland Paul Pomroy outlined the decision to reopen.
Mr Pomroy said: “On May 13 we will reopen 15 of our restaurants in the UK; this will be in a limited capacity with delivery only.
“The restaurants involved will be announced next week as we work through inviting our employees back to work and supporting our delivery partners to prepare for our gradual return.”
