In January 2019 the Duchess of Sussex became patron of Mayhew, a British animal welfare charity founded in 2010. Meghan approached the charity herself after coming across and being impressed by its work.
Many of Meghan’s other charity patronages, such as of the National Theatre and Association of Commonwealth Universities, were handed to her by the Queen.
The Duchess wrote a note in Mayhew’s annual report and revealed she had renewed the sponsorship of a dog kennel in the name of her son Archie.
She commented: “I would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all of the volunteers, staff and students at Mayhew.
“As an expression of my own commitment, I renewed my sponsorship of a dog kennel in the name of our son, Archie, to create an interim home for a pet in need.
“I hope you will show them your support in whatever ways you can.
“When you do, you will be contributing not just to animal welfare but to the shared welfare of us all.”
The post was accompanied by a picture of Meghan with a dog wearing a special collar and one of the charity’s workers.
Meghan has continued her charitable work since moving to Los Angeles earlier this year and has been seen delivering food parcels to vulnerable people during the coronavirus pandemic.
“And of course, the international neutering and vaccination programmes protect dogs while helping to empower struggling communities to build a more positive relationship with the animals that live among them.”
Meghan and Harry have two dogs, a black labrador and a beagle, which they brought with them to their new LA home.
According to Vanity Fair magazine Archie is close to the two dogs with a source speaking to the publication commenting “they make him laugh and are gentle with him”.
Meghan and Harry shocked the world in January by announcing their intention to step down as senior members of the royal family.
The couple announced they planned to become “financially independent” and said they would divide their time between the UK and North America.
After negotiations with other members of the royal family they agreed to stop using their ‘HRH’ titles and to pay back the taxpayer money spent refurbishing Frogmore Cottage.
Initially after leaving the UK Meghan and Harry spent time in Canada before settling in LA.
Meghan was born in LA and her mother, Doria Ragland, also lives in the city.
In May 2018 Meghan married Prince Harry and became the Duchess of Sussex.
Before that she was best known as an actress for her role on US legal drama Suits.
