Met Office weather forecast: Ferocious winds to rip through UK before temperatures rocket

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for gusts of 60mph wind in northern regions of England and Scotland as low pressure from the Atlantic blasts Britain this weekend. This will last until 4pm on Sunday and affect areas in Teesside, such as Stockton-on-Tees, as well as Newcastle, Cumbria and Dundee. The Met Office said in its latest forecast: “An area of low pressure is expected to develop over the Atlantic and track eastwards across central Scotland during Sunday with strong winds developing across a large swathe of the UK. 

“Gusts of 50-60 mph are most likely over and to the east of high ground, particularly the Pennines which may lead to some travel disruption.

“With trees in full leaf, fallen branches and damaged trees may cause some localised travel and power disruption.

“While there is high confidence in the development of the low pressure system, there is the potential for a much deeper system with stronger winds and a risk of severe gales around coasts and through the Central Belt.”

Meanwhile, high pressure will sweep across the UK next week, bring highs of 30C in London, according to Net Weather.

Highs of 26C in North Yorkshire and 23C in Scotland by July 13. 

But today the weather is set to remain humid and showery, with thunder and gusty winds also possible in some areas.

The forecast on Weather Outlook said: “The rest of next week is looking mixed. The south should have quite a lot of dry and weather and there will be some warmer days. In the north it stays more unsettled with showers or longer spells of rain and at times they could push southwards.”

He said: “For those in the west or the north west, they are certainly going to need a raincoat or an umbrella as there will be some rain around.

“Even in some eastern areas, we could not say it is going to be completely dry.

“But anyone living in East Anglia or maybe parts of Yorkshire probably has a best (chance) of staying dry, compared to the rest of the country.”

The forecast comes as West Midlands Labour police and crime commissioner David Jamieson said police are “praying for rain” on Saturday as pubs and clubs stage a cautious reopening.

Mr Jamieson said while he thought people would “use good sense”, it was “very bad” timing by the Government to pick a Saturday night.

He added: “The Chief Constable and I often meet in the summer, we often have a discussion about the weekends.

“It is the case that when the weather is inclement, the problems we have are somewhat reduced.

“So we are praying for rain this Saturday.”
