Michael Jackson: Lisa Marie Presley on how King of Pop proposed and unexpected marriage

Michael Jackson first met Lisa Marie Presley when she was just seven-years-old and he was 17. At the time, he was performing in Las Vegas with The Jackson 5 and, according to him, Elvis Presley’s daughter attended several of their shows flanked by bodyguards. The King of Pop attempted to get back in touch with Presley when she was 18.

In 1995, Jackson and Presley appeared on Primetime Live for an interview with Diane Sawyer.

During the broadcast, the Thriller hitmaker recalled his history with his new wife.

“When she was 18 I used to tell my lawyer, ‘Do you know Lisa?’” he said, revealing his lawyer had represented Presley’s mother Priscilla Presley.

“‘Well can you get in touch with her because I think she’s really cute,’” he remembered asking his lawyer, who assured the star he would do his best.

But Jackson said he was increasingly disappointed when the lawyer was unable to get in touch with Presley for him.

Then he saw her picture splashed on the cover of a magazine: she had married her first husband Danny Keough.

Jackson said the news “tore [him] to pieces”, saying: “Because I felt that was supposed to be me, I really did.”

Presley split from her husband six years later, however, and reconnected with the singer weeks later.

Opening up on the proposal, she said: “I was separated for four months and he said, ‘What would you do if I asked you to marry me?’ And I said, ‘I would.’

“You were really enthusiastic!” Jackson teased, laughing and reaching over to hold her hand.

Despite their assertions the relationship wasn’t hidden away, Jackson and Presley’s marriage was unexpected news and prompted divided responses from people around the world.

The pair remained together for two years but divorced in 1996.

In an interview with The Sun last year, Jackson’s former assistant and close friend Scott Shaffer spoke out about the end of their relationship, saying he saw things “going downhill” when his boss started keeping things from his wife, like where he was going on trips.

He said the “final straw” for their marriage was when the pop icon collapsed on stage filming his HBO special in New York.

“She rushed out to come and see him in the hospital and he told he she was only allowed to see him for a certain amount of time,” he remembered.

“He gave her an hour or even less that she could visit him and then she had to leave — so he essentially put a time limit on her.

“At that point she’d just had enough and that was literally when she called her lawyer to start divorce proceedings,” he claimed.
