The Spaniard’s contract is set to expire on Sunday, with the Toon today revealing that the former Real Madrid boss would leave his post at the weekend after failing to agree a new contract.
“We have worked hard to extend Rafa’s contract over a significant period of time, however it has not been – and will not be – possible to reach an agreement with Rafa and his representatives.
“Rafa’s coaching staff, Paco de Miguel Moreno, Antonio Gomez Perez and Mikel Antia, will also leave the club on June 30.
“We would like to thank Rafa and his coaching team for their efforts over the last three years and their significant contribution to what has been collectively achieved.
“We would also like to thank our supporters, players and staff for their patience during a period of uncertainty.”
The statement was met with huge amounts of anger from the Magpies’ faithful, who directed their rage towards owner Mike Ashley and managing director Lee Charnley.
One fan wrote on Twitter: “Well over a decade of disgrace continues. Truly another dark day for #NUFC under the regime of Ashley. Thank you @rafabenitezweb.”
Another added: “Is Mike Ashley vying for the most hated man on Tyneside Award? Absolute disgrace he’s let Rafa go.”
“I am 100% confident that Mike Ashley is THE most hated person on the planet,” tweeted another.
Another supporter posted: “What a sad day to be a #NUFC fan. The owner has no ambition to do anything good with this great club. I can’t imagine what would be going through his thick skull to allow Rafa to walk.”
A number of Geordies couldn’t help but predict a third relegation from the Premier League after the news broke, with optimism of a potential takeover by the Bin Zyed Group also fading in the aftermath of the announcement.
One fan tweeted: “Absolute disgrace, Mike Ashley has belittled this club again over his own personal agenda.
“Get rid of a World Class manager because he wants to work with more than a shoestring and be competitive. Relegation Number 3….pending.”
Another wrote: “Announce relegation. Shambles of a club.”
“It’s an absolute disaster. The club is officially doomed” added a third.
One fan was accepting of relegation however – as long as it meant Sports Direct owner Ashley would leave St James’ Park.
They wrote: “I would accept being in League 2 to get Ashley out this f**ked club.”
