Motorists want to see this optional car extra made mandatory in proposed major law change

According to GOV.UK motorists can display the probationary P plates to show they have just passed and can leave them on a vehicle for as long as they like.

However, the agency confirms you do not have to display them if you have successfully passed your driving test.

GOV.UK says learner drivers must display their “L” plates at all times while on the roads to avoid heavy penalties.

Motorists can get up to six penalty points of not displaying an L on the side of a vehicle to ion the sticker is not the right size.

New proposals being considered by the Department for Transport could see newly qualified drivers restricted from certain activities under a graduated licence system.
