M&S launch food delivery service with Deliveroo ahead of £1.5 bn Ocado deal

The food delivery will be handled by Deliveroo, after the two firms successfully trialled the service. Shoppers will be able to browse more than 130 items from M&S, including food, beverage and household products, according to reports.

On the website’s launch page, M&S say: “This new service is available across selected M&S stores and in over 100 BP M&S stores – it’s just one of the many ways we are supporting our customers and communities during these unprecedented times.”

To use the service, shoppers must first download the Deliveroo app through the Google play or Apple App store.

Second, they must enter their delivery address, which enables the app to locate the nearest M&S store.

Alternatively, users can simply use the search bar and search for M&S to select a store that way.

Once a shop is selected, users can begin filling their baskets. Once shopping is complete, tap on the “view basket button”, and then tap “go to checkout” to pay.

When the order is on its way, users can track its progress using the app. Plus, the service also offers contact-free delivery.

A wide range of items including fresh fruit, vegetables, pasta, meat, sweets, toilet roll, alcohol and more will be available.

The move follows a previous delivery scheme launched by the retailer earlier this year, in which people isolating at home could order boxes of “essential” M&S products for lockdown.

The £35 box is currently out of stock, but includes pasta, rice, sweets, sauces and more.

Other boxes are also available, including a seasonal fruit box for £20.

Meanwhile, M&S is planning to launch a £1.5 billion delivery deal with Ocado later this year, after agreeing it over a year ago.

As part of the deal, the retailer paid for a 50 percent share in the Ocado.com joint-venture, which will start operating in September this year when Ocado’s deal to deliver Waitrose products finishes.

Steve Rowe, M&S Chief Executive, said that combining the retailer’s range with Ocado’s delivery network would drive long-term growth.

He added: “I have always believed that M&S Food could and should be online.”

And Tim Steiner, chief executive of Ocado, said it was a “transformative” deal for the UK retail sector that would provide “an unrivalled online grocery offer”.

But the Guardian reported that M&S shares tumbled by 12 percent after the deal, due to concerns that the retailer had paid too much for access to Ocado’s services.

It reportedly wiped over £550 million off of M&S’ market value at the time, though Ocado’s shares saw moderate growth of three percent.

Rowe disagreed with investor sentiment, telling reporters he believed the company paid a “fair price.”

In other retail news, Lidl has become the first UK supermarket to close the doors of one of its branches because “several” staff members tested positive for Covid-19, according to Retail Gazette.

The discount chain closed its Middlesbrough branch on Friday, and it remained closed over the weekend due to a staff shortage.

The company said it is “vitally important that we reopen the store as soon as we can, to ensure that households have access to the essential food and products they need.”

It is not known how many staff members have tested positive for the virus.
