Newcastle’s £300m Saudi takeover is set to be confirmed next week. The Amanda Stavely led group will acquire the club in a deal agreed with Mike Ashley which will turn Newcastle into one of the wealthiest sports teams in the world.
And the announcement is due within the next seven days with the Premier League set to sign off on the deal.
The Premier League has been warned to reject the deal due to piracy complaints from beIN Sport and by human rights activists, but the Saudis are confident the deal is now a formality.
House of Saud report the Newcastle board are also confident of an announcement ‘within, at most, the next week’.
The new owners, which will be made of Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund, Staveley’s PCP Capital Partners and the Rueben Brothers, have also drafted up a ‘dream list’ of players to target in the transfer market and are working on a deal for Mauricio Pochettino to replace Steve Bruce.
Newcastle have already been linked with the likes of Philippe Coutinho and Kalidou Koulibaly in the last few days.
Reports in Spain this morning claimed Barcelona were ready to sell Coutinho to Newcastle with other options seeming thin on the ground.
Barca want to move Coutinho on and need a buyer with Bayern unlikely to trigger their permanent option as part of his loan deal.
And while Pochettino appears the favourite to replace Bruce, there are at least three other big names on the shortlist including former boss Rafa Benitez, who was in charge when Stavely previously tried to get the deal done.
Max Allege and Julian Nagelsmann are also being considered, but it was reported last week that the current squad are keen to keep Bruce in charge.
However Don Hutchison has said if the club get Pochettino, super star players will follow.
“The most important man at the moment to try and get through the door is Pochettino,” Hutchison said.
“If you’re the owners and you’ve got all this money behind you that you want to pump into Newcastle – the first one you have to get right is the manager.
“If you get a world-class manager in Pochettino, I guarantee that players in the Premier League and all around Europe will be looking at Newcastle thinking ‘that could be a club I want to join.
“They’re only going to go one way, and that’s right into the top-six and hopefully the top-four. Newcastle need a massive rebuild.
“Coutinho isn’t going to win Newcastle the title at the moment on his own, with the current crop of players.
“He’s not even going to take them into the top four or six.
“It’s going to take Pochettino coming through the door, then Coutinho coming in, then all of a sudden everybody will take Newcastle seriously.
“At the moment, it’s not done and it’s just a pipe dream, but Pochettino and Coutinho at Newcastle I’m pretty sure the best players in the league would want to join Newcastle.”
