NHS birthday Spitfire flypast: How to watch Spitfire flypast today – Is Duxford cancelled?

The NHS celebrated its 72nd last week and Britons across the country paid tribute to the health service on Sunday with a Clap for the NHS and by filling their windows with blue light. Today a Spitfire plane was due to fly over the country, but how can you watch the flyover?

The NHS was founded 72 years ago on Sunday, July 5.

The whole country was invited to take part in a Clap for the NHS at 5pm and light up their windows with blue light to show their support for the health servive.

But for fans of flyovers, the event is also due to be marked by a series of flyovers.

The British warplane will be flying over various hospitals in and around the county with ‘THANK U NHS’ etched on the underside of the wings.

The Spitfire will be painted with names of 80,000 people who have helped during the coronavirus pandemic.

People have been able to nominate those who have given support during the coronavirus outbreak.

For a minimum donation of £10 to NHS Charities Together, the name will be hand written onto the iconic blue Spitfire before its journeys.

Owners the Aircraft Restoration Company said: “From a supportive family member to a kind neighbour, local community hero to frontline worker, you can say thank you for their support through the Covid-19 pandemic by nominating their name to be written upon the NHS Spitfire.

“By doing so you will also be helping to raise money for the incredible people working and volunteering within our NHS.

“As the 80,000 names are added to the Spitfire, the UK will be able to watch this extraordinary visual spectacle unfold.”

People are able to make donations until September 20, or until all 80,000 names have been taken.

You can donate and suggest a name for yourself here.
