While there has been much success for Nintendo with their new Switch console, there were predictions of another gaming disaster brewing.
Following its full reveal, the new PS4 and Xbox One rival was not backed fully by analysts, who were cautious over the success of a handheld hybrid.
However, with the launch of the Nintendo Switch alongside games like Zelda: Breath of the Wild, the console quickly established itself as the next big thing.
Sales numbers impressed during the consoles initial months and were spurred on by an exclusive games release strategy that kept owners engaged.
Since then, analysts have started to mull over the future of the Nintendo Switch and where it could go next.
So the good news received by the company this week will no doubt help in shaping their predictions moving forward.
According to the NPD Group which tracks sales in the United States, the Nintendo Switch is the fastest-selling console of this hardware generation through 21 months.
This includes sales from March 2018 to November 2018, which has seen more than 8.7 million Nintendo Switch units sold.
That puts the Switch ahead of the PS4 and Xbox One in U.S. sales at the same point in their life cycles.
And that has to be seen as a massive boost for the Nintendo Switch, especially with new consoles from Sony and Microsoft expected to be announced in 2019.
“We are thrilled to see such a strong reaction from consumers in the second holiday season for Nintendo Switch,” said Doug Bowser, Nintendo of America’s Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing.
“We’re looking forward to delivering more excitement and smiles to our fans in the coming year and beyond.”
It should be noted that the Nintendo Switch has outsold its rivals when it comes to sales in under two years of their respective lifecycles; it still has a way to go to catch its main rival.
The PS4 remains the market leader and will be a hard act to follow when it comes to overall sales.
It’s been confirmed that over 86 million PS4 units have been sold worldwide, putting it in a prime spot to climb the list of best selling consoles ever.
And it appears that 2019 could be another massive year for both the PS4 and Nintendo Switch.
According to a new report, the Nintendo Switch will be the best-selling console for the year.
The Global Game Console Market Forecast from Strategy Analytics predicts the Switch selling 17.3 million consoles in 2019.
That’s a massive number and would put in front of the PS4 by a small amount.
The prediction also states that Sony will see 17.1 million PS4 and PS4 Pro consoles sold during the same time period.
David Watkins, Director at Strategy Analytics, commented, “Contrary to some expectations, the global TV games console market remains healthy.
“Many pundits have written it off over the years, for reasons ranging from the emergence of cloud gaming to the dominance of mobile devices and the arrival of VR, but it refuses to die.
“In fact, there is an argument that the enduring appeal of the TV games console, now in its sixth decade, continues to demonstrate the weaknesses and limitations of alternative games platforms.”
If the Nintendo Switch can pull off sales of that calibre, you can expect to see a lot more third-party game try and make it onto the console in 2020.
