The US president has previously praised Mr Johnson as a “friend” and said he would succeed as Prime Minster. He said on Twitter: “Congratulations to Boris Johnson on becoming the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. He will be great!” Mr Johnson defeated Mr Hunt by 66 to 44 percent in the Tory membership vote section of the leadership contest.

He said he would deliver Brexit, unite the party and defeat Jeremy Corbyn.

Mr Trump previously said of Mr Johnson: “He’s a different kind of a guy but they say I’m a different kind of a guy too.

“I like Boris Johnson, I always have. We get along well.”

He previously condemned Mrs May and her Brexit negotiations and said Mr Johnson would do a better job.

“But I think Boris would do a very good job. I think he would be excellent. I like him. I have always liked him.

“I don’t know that he is going to be chosen but I think he is a very good guy, a very talented person.”
