Power fans were devastated to see leading man James ‘Ghost’ St Patrick (played by Omari Hardwick) bow out of the Starz series after being shot by son Tariq St Patrick (Michael Rainey Jr). With so many loose ends to tie up, all hope for answers seemed lost until the US network announced a new spin-off titled Power Book II: Ghost would continue the St Patrick family story – much to the delight of fans. Ahead of its premiere, Rainey Jr admitted he “didn’t believe” he’d be the face of his own series as well as spilling details on what fans can expect from the all-new drama.
Express.co.uk: First of all, congratulations – how does it feel to have your own spin-off?
Rainey Jr: “Honestly, it’s been amazing. When I was first told that I was gonna be a lead of my own show, I didn’t believe it.
“50 Cent told me when we were filming season six, he was like ‘yo, you know you’re gonna be the lead of your own show soon’ and I was just like ‘whatever’,
“It’s 50 Cent so sometimes he’ll be just like joking around. Then two weeks after, Courtney (Kemp) [Power showrunner] tells me the same exact thing, so that’s when I’m like ‘Oh s**t’, it definitely got real for me at that point.
“Once Courtney told me, I was still in disbelief but honestly I really appreciate it, you know.
“The workload is lit now, it’s huge now but my crew and the cast they make it so much easier for me. When I first started I honestly thought it was gonna be like a lot of pressure and I was kinda nervous, I never really get nervous for anything but that was the first thing I actually got a bit nervous for.”
Would it have been difficult to do a spin-off without Naturi Naughton?
Rainey Jr: “I don’t wanna say it would’ve been difficult but it definitely would be more like, more to get used to, you know?
“Like when we came back filming for the spin-off, it was refreshing though because I’d seen a lot of the same faces that I saw when we were filming Power so it was good, I felt good about that.
“Obviously we got some new faces but the whole crew is tight anyway so I appreciate my whole crew.
“The cast and everybody, they really make it easier for me, they definitely took some of the stress off my shoulders.”
Going back to Power, did you think it would be Tariq who’d shoot Ghost when Courtney made the decision he was gonna die?
Rainey Jr: “No, I never expected it, honestly. I didn’t expect it,
“But before we started filming the season, they gave me the rundown on my character’s plot sheet so once I saw that I was like ‘damn, that’s intense right there’.
“But I really wasn’t expecting it to take that turn from season four to five and then to six, that was definitely a big one for me, that was crazy.”
How do you see Tariq’s story ending? Similar to his father?
Rainey Jr: “I feel like Ghost is instilled in Tariq, that’s in his blood.
“I think it’s inevtiable that Tariq turns out to be like Ghost, because you see he had the money from his parents but he didn’t care about that, he wanted to make his own money, he’s that hustler, that hustler’s instinct is just in him,
“He wants to do his own thing and be in control of his own money, so I think it’s inevitable for Tariq to turn out kind of like Ghost but I feel like he could maybe do it a little better.”
How long do you Book II can go?
Rainey Jr: “Man, I wanna take it for as long as we can go, you know. We did six years with Power so god willing maybe we can do six years with Book II as well, god willing.”
Power Book II: Ghost premieres on Starzplay on September 6.
