Prince Charles's status 'changed overnight' after Philip's death – 'Needs time to think'

Prince Charles has been the heir to the throne for most of his life, with his mother the Queen being crowned when he was only a toddler. However, the role of patriarch of the House of Windsor remained firmly in the hands of Prince Philip for more than seven decades.

In the wake of his father’s death, Prince Charles has found himself both Prince of Wales and patriarch of the Royal Family.

This change has “impacted him both professionally and personally”, according to a source, who added Prince Charles wanted some time to “reflect alone” following the funeral.

The source told MailOnline columnist Dan Wootton: “Charles felt he wanted to reflect alone.

“He also wants to attend to the thousands of letters sent to him in condolence of his father’s death.

“He is acutely aware that this is a hugely significant moment in his life and he feels like he has the weight on the world of his shoulders.

“All his life he has been heir to throne, but Prince Philip was the patriarch of the family.

“Overnight that’s changed, and it’s impacted him both professionally and personally.

“He needs time to think and contemplate the future of the Royal Family after what was a very difficult week.”

Among the issues likely to be at the forefront of the prince’s mind when it comes to the Royal Family there is the need to find a balance between the enormous workload and the diminishing number of working royals.

Moreover, the feud between the Sussexes and the rest of the Windsors is believed to be far from healed.

Within 24 hours of Prince Philip’s funeral, Prince Charles reportedly travelled to his home in Llwynywermod, just outside the Brecon Beacons.

This three-bedroom converted farmhouse sits on the Welsh estate owned by the Duchy of Cornwall.

The prince and the Duchess of Cornwall usually spend a few days there every summer.

However, Prince Charles is believed to have travelled to Wales without his beloved wife to properly process the death of his father and think about the future.

The source said: “There is no better place for Charles to come to terms with his grief and start to think about his future.

“He has a daunting amount to consider, including the ongoing tensions between William and Harry which will not be easily resolved.”

Prince Charles, Prince William and Prince Harry are believed to have held a face-to-face meeting in Windsor after the Duke of Edinburgh’s funeral.

This was their first chat in person since March 2020, and came more than a month after Meghan and Harry’s incendiary interview with Oprah Winfrey.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who are no longer full-time working royals, told Ms Winfrey about their struggles during their time as senior members of the Firm.

They also claimed they were not supported by the Royal Family and the palace despite asking for help.

Prince Harry said he feels “really let down” by his father, who he said lived a similar experience to his own but did not help him.

Speaking to the US journalist, Harry said: “There’s a lot to work through there, you know?

“I feel really let down, because he’s been through something similar.

“He knows what pain feels like, and this is… and Archie’s his grandson.

“But, at the same time, you know, I, of course I will always… I will always love him, but there’s a lot of hurt that’s happened.

“And I will continue to make it one of my priorities to try and heal that relationship.”
